Can anyone explain a little more about affiliate programs?
I am working on a small self help type of website and I have been reading up on affiliate programs. It seems like a good way to use the website to earn a little extra money while still being able to help others as I intended.
This is what I understand about the process so far. You sign up with a company and they give you links to their websites to put on your website. When someone clicks on that link you get a small commission.
Are there any scams to look out for?
Where should I go to find reputable companies?
Any other tidbits of advice would be welcomed
How much money can you really make doing this?

Dorie,
My answers to your questions are below:
Are there any scams to look out for? Yes. You should not have to pay to promote a product or service through an affiliate program. You get compensated for the sales you refer.
Where should I go to find reputable companies? is the largest one for mainstream products.
Any other tidbits of advice would be welcomed. Yes. Read the free e-book I refer below.
