Internet Marketing Choices: How to Choose a Business Model

by Steve Shaw

Internet marketing is full of a lot of choices, and your first choice is deciding on which business model you are going to follow. If you don’t make this choice carefully, you’ll find yourself hopping from business model to business model, spending money on programs and “secrets,” and not making any profits at all. Trust me when I say that finding a business model that appeals to you and working with that model will go a long way toward helping you succeed online.

There are a few basic business models to choose from. Each of them have their advantages and disadvantages. By looking over this list and considering your strengths, you should know where you want to focus your business.

Become an Author

When you create your own product, you are in complete control of your stream of income. By writing a product, or hiring a ghostwriter to write one, you can set up a website and sell your product over and over again. You can set up an affiliate program so other people are selling the product for you. The only major downside is that you can spend a lot of time and money working on a niche product that may not pan out.

- Affiliate.

If you use affiliate programs, you don’t need to spend thousands of dollars to come up with your own product. All you need to do is to have a good promotional plan to market the product well. You will make money through commissions from the product creators by sending buyers to their website. However if you use this business model, you’re uncertain when will the product creator stop offering their product.

- Administrator.

To start your own membership site is a good option. With infoproducts and affiliate programs, it’s like hitting two birds with one stone, you will earn money from a one time sale. Having your own membership site you’ll have a steady income. Present reports each month on a niche topic, provide coaching for free and host a forum. Using affiliate programs in your membership site will drive new members. The disadvantage is you need to have fresh content every month so that your members will stick around.

Become an Auction player

One of the most frequently visited sites on the internet is eBay. If you become an eBay seller, you don’t need to worry as much about driving traffic to your site. You can market different things on eBay, including infoproducts. Even though there are some changes in the way infoproducts are sold on eBay, the amount of traffic and ease to set up your offer make eBay a good business model. The con is that you will rely on a third party site and their changing rules may effect your business someday.

As you can see, there are ups and downs to every business model available online. By looking at your own strengths and what you want to get out of your business, you should be able to find the right model for you.
